Do you have a password manager?

We spend a lot of our time grappling passwords. That’s because most, if not all, applications require them.  And, they are essential security tools for protecting private and corporate business data.

This month, we’re focusing on using password managers – a really effective way to help you manage strong passwords without having to make everything memorable.

In our training, results show there’s a clear correlation between our password episodes and the increase in people starting to use a password manager. Don’t just take our word for it – you can read about it in our latest blog. And below, you’ll find three useful tips for choosing the best password manager for you.

Notifications on your lock screen

A recent article on the BBC website focused on a spate of thefts from London gym lockers. People were having their phones and bank cards stolen while they were working out, only to discover that the thief had spent thousands of pounds, moved money from savings to current accounts and had full access to bank accounts.

You can read the full article here to see how this can happen, but our biggest takeaway is to remove notifications from your lock screen. If your bank sends an access code to your phone, a scammer can see it without having to access your phone, and from there, can load your card onto a banking app on their own phone.

Take notifications off your lock screen today and check how much security information your own banking app needs in order to resend your PIN or a security code.

Tips for choosing a password manager
A password manager helps you to store all the different passwords you need, so you don’t have to memorise them, write them down, or compromise your security. Not all password managers are equal though, so here are our top tips for choosing yours.

Tip #1
Advanced Encryption.

Your password manager should have end-to-end encryption so that your data is indecipherable in transit and at rest.  It means the only person who has the unique authentication key to decrypt is you.  Not even the password manager.

Tip #2
Multiple devices.

Will the password manager work across all your devices – laptop, phone, tablet, PC? You probably access protected sites from all these devices, so make sure the password manager you choose supports this across the trusted devices you want to set up.

Tip #3
Multi-factor authentication.

As an additional security level, look for a password manager that allows you to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). You should really enable this on every application you have that allows it.

Speaking at Belgium’s Cyber Security Coalition

Earlier this month, our founder Mark Brown spoke at a meeting of the Cyber Security Coalition, a Belgium-based organisation that aims to bolster the country’s cyber resilience and organises a wide range of meetings between academia, private companies and public authorities.

Mark spoke on the Psychology of Phishing and how cyber criminals, or phishers, use psychology against us.  Phishing is an attack on people, not systems. By understanding and recognising the psychology of why we act on phishing mails in the way that we do, we are more likely to avoid falling prey to them.

Should you wish to have Mark speak to your organisation about the psychology of phishing and how using recognised behaviour science can give you the tools to protect yourself and your organisation, get in touch today or book an initial call with Mark to discuss.

You can find out more by reading our blog on the Psychology of Phishing.
