Travel sector is latest target for cyber criminals

Well, this isn’t strictly true – Expedia was hacked in 2017, losing the private data of around 800,000 people. And in 2020, US travel company CWT Global ended up paying $4.5m to get its data back after a ransomware attack.

But we’ve noticed an increase in stories about people who’ve had their travel plans disrupted by hackers – and this could be down to poor cyber security at the travel agent you’ve booked with – whether that’s physically, or online.

And if you run a travel company, you’ll know the value of the personal data you hold – including passport details. So it makes sense to do everything you can to ensure you keep that data safe.

You can read more about cyber risks for the travel industry in our latest blog – useful for travel agencies and anyone who ever travels!

Praise for Psybersafe

We’re always delighted to get great feedback from our learners – they often say how fun and useful the training is, and how they have really changed their habits to help protect themselves and the organisations they work for.

Recently, we had an email from someone who’s several episodes into their training:

“… I found it interesting to see another facet of how phishing works. At our service, we are confronted with fraud every day and you often wonder why people still fall for it.
For us personally, courses that address new ways of fraud, or discuss the psychology behind it, are very interesting because we already have a basic knowledge of phishing, but often have to go a little further in the investigation.
Now that I have finished all episodes in the context of Psybersafe, I must say that they are well put together. They are not too long, but interactive enough to keep you focused with the result that you pick up something afterwards.
Also nice are the tips and tricks that we get on a professional level, but also on a personal level.”

It just goes to show that because things are changing so fast, you can’t rely on what you think you know about cyber crime to protect you. We really appreciate this feedback – it’s a great example of how our training can help.

ActionFraud advice
The cost of living crisis means that paying for a holiday is a big deal. Losing that money to a scammer could be catastrophic. So here are ActionFraud’s top tips to keep your holiday safe this summer:

#1
Don’t reply to unsolicited messages of any type – even if they contain irresistible holiday offers! Replying, downloading, opening or following links are the hacker’s easiest way into your device.

#2
Book your holiday directly with a company you trust. This could be an online agency, airline or hotel chain. Check you are on a legitimate site and that the company is a member of the Association of British Travel Agents.

#3
For direct bookings – with a property owner, for example – make sure their site has the ‘padlock icon’ in the address bar. Pay with a debit or credit card for extra protection and be suspicious if you’re asked to pay by bank transfer or cash.
