It’ll never happen to you… or will it?

You won’t be surprised to know that we get a lot of stories about sophisticated scams. Stories from people we know – people who are careful, sensible and not usually scam-able.

So, it’s a mark of how clever scammers are that their psychological tactics work – even with people who know how to protect themselves.

That’s the subject of our blog this month, a real, recent case about someone we know who was taken in by a clever scam: “My daughter got scammed out of £8,200!”. We never imagine it will happen to us, but it literally only takes one tap or click, and that’s more easily done than you think. Read the blog to find out more.

Are you ready for a safe Black Friday?

Black Friday is a massive shopping event – taking place this year on November 24th – and Cyber Monday (November 27th) is fast catching up. In a cost of living crisis, everyone wants a deal, and retailers are more than happy to oblige – with deals available up to a week leading up to the event.

But this is a bonanza time for hackers and scammers too. If we’re so keen for a bargain that we forget to take the time for basic security checks, we’re far more likely to fall foul of a clever scam – and end up losing money rather than saving it.

By the way, if you’re shopping on a legitimate site, make sure you’re not buying at a price that looks lower now, but is only lower because they just put their price UP last month!  It happens.

And, if a price looks too good to be true – it probably is!
You can also read our previous Psychology of Phishing blog to remind yourself of the ways scammers get your attention and how you can protect yourself.

Catch of the Day

One of our most highly-praised episodes is Catch of the Day – where we talk about the various psychological behaviours hackers use to get us to part with our private information. In the episode, we help people learn how to identify whether a message is a scam, and show them what to do if they are suspicious. Our top three tips are:

We take a look at the kind of emails Emily gets and see if she, and you, can spot the phishing emails from the genuine.  The reality is that it can get quite tricky!
