From rule to ritual: The secret power of the badge

In this issue...

This month we look at how everyday symbols can shape culture, boost secure behaviour, and shift security from “rules” to “rituals.”  We include 3 quick tips on encouraging cyber habits in the workplace and join Mark at the BE-CYBER event in Belgium.

From Mandate to Movement

Security rules often focus on enforcement: “wear your badge, follow the policy.” But culture is built on something stronger: identity. When people see badges not as a rule but as a symbol of belonging, behaviours shift.

Just like mask-wearing became a shared act of care during COVID, badge-wearing can become a visible ritual that says: “I’m one of us, and I care about protecting us.”
That’s why the goal isn’t just compliance. It’s creating an environment where people want to display secure habits because they feel part of the culture, not just subject to rules.

Future events: Belgium Cyber Security Coalition

Mark (Founder and CEO of Psybersafe) will be speaking at BE-CYBER in Brussels on Tuesday 7 October, an event organised by the Belgium Cyber Security Coalition.
The topic: The Psychology of Social Engineering: Why Smart People Get Hacked

Discover how behavioural insights can help us understand, and defend against, the tactics of cybercriminals. Mark’s session will explore why even the smartest individuals fall for social engineering and how we can build resilience.
